Barbarian Class

"The true law of the race is progress and development. Whenever civilization pauses in the march of conquest, it is overthrown by the barbarian." - William Gilmore Simms

Overview

A barbarian's WeaponThe barbarian is a mean fighting machine. They are masters of fighting, and are often among the strongest members of an adventuring party. Somewhat less civilized than the fighters, they can inflict additional damage by going into a berserk attack.

Barbarians gain the Berserk skill, which can cause them to go into a combat frenzy if hurt too badly. Once in frenzy they attack without mercy, raising their ability to harm their enemies as well as allowing for more rapid frenzied attacks.

This process is incredibly draining, and coming out of berserk, even if it only lasts a few seconds, will leave a Barbarian incredibly fatigued. While in berserk a barbarian looses all control of speech and most of their actions. The frenzy consumes them, making them drool and focus on nothing more than blood and death.

Characteristic scores beneficial to a Barbarian adventurer

  • Strength: Exceedingly useful to an adventurer of this class for obvious reasons.

  • Dexterity: Helpful for a better ability to hit your enemies.

  • Agility: Helpful for quick feet, allowing faster movement and making you harder to hit.

  • Constitution: Helpful for high hit points and fatigue.

  • Alignment: Any

  • Religion Restriction: Elindale: Elindale is more concerned with the delicate balance of life, the cause for battle and the outcome, then the battle itself.

    Special Abilities

    Berserk
Berserk Attack represents the ability to go into a state of semi-controlled chaotic rage. Said state allows the berserker to cause more destruction in melee combat.

    Elder RP Note

    Berserk
Over the years, Barbarians have been viewed in one of two ways.

One view is that of a loincloth wearing warrior from uncivilized lands. Perhaps wearing a feathered headdress and a hide covered shield.

However another view is to think of barbarians as berserkers much like the ones in the Icelandic Sagas. They are then viewed warriors who are revered in their society because of their ferociousness in battle. Nothing else matters. The reasons for battle aren't as important as the battle itself. Even the outcome of the battle isn't as important as merely being in battle.

In Dgate we have people in both camps. Staff has even taken each side in different situations over the years. For example, there are uncivilized barbarian type items for sale in the guild shops. But the tenets of the class and manual descriptions over the years talk about dying in battle being the greatest honor, and never wearing above chainmail because it's a sign of weakness. These are attributes that go more to a berserker type that a barbarian type.

In the end, the RP choice is yours.
